A Sip of History
Beaujolais Nouveau originated in the Beaujolais region of France, just south of Burgundy. This wine traces its roots back to the 19th century when it was produced as a quick, fresh drink to toast the end of the grape harvest. By the 1950s, winemakers began to promote it as a celebratory wine, and the tradition of racing to bring bottles to market was born. In 1985, France officially declared the third Thursday of November as the wine’s release date and you are not allowed to sell it before this date (it's the law) —a day that has since grown into a worldwide event.
The Rules of the Game
Beaujolais Nouveau is governed by strict rules under French wine law:
It must be made entirely from Gamay grapes, a variety known for its thin skin and bright, fruity character.
Grapes must come from the Beaujolais AOC region, where granite-rich soils give the wine its distinctive taste.
Fermentation uses a method called carbonic maceration, which preserves fresh, fruity flavors without heavy tannins.
The wine is bottled just 6-8 weeks after harvest, making it one of the freshest wines available.
The result? A wine that’s light, fruity with notes of cherry, strawberry, and banana—truly a youthful wine.
